9/5/2008 Terence Newman, CB (Dal) Newman is listed as questionable for the season opener at Cleveland.

Analysis: Newman's uncertain status on Friday's injury report was another sign that Adam Jones may make his Dallas debut as a starter on Sunday. It will be Jones' first NFL game since the 2006 season. Cowboys coach Wade Phillips said this week that Jones would start if Newman wasn't in the lineup. Newman missed nearly all of training camp, and the entire preseason, while dealing with a slightly torn groin muscle.
9/5/2008 Jerry Porter, WR (Jac) Porter was ruled out of Sunday's season opener at Tennessee because of a hamstring injury.

Analysis: Porter, who signed a lucrative contract to be the team's No. 1 receiver during the offseason, had surgery to repair a torn hamstring a week before training camp. He missed all of camp and the preseason, but returned to practice Monday and had hoped to be back for the opener. But Porter missed portions of practice Thursday and Friday, making coach Jack Del Rio's decision to hold him out another week an easy one.
9/5/2008 Willie Anderson, T (Bal) After signing his three-year, $11 million contract with the Ravens on Friday, Anderson hopes to play in Sunday's season opener against the team that cut him.

Analysis: The 6-foot-5, 340-pound former Cincinnati Bengals team captain isn't expected to start immediately at right tackle, where Adam Terry is atop the depth chart. The 33-year-old Anderson was cut by the Bengals after refusing to take a pay cut and chose the Ravens over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, San Diego Chargers and St. Louis Rams. Anderson has started 173 of 181 career games after being drafted in the first round in 1996 out of Auburn.
9/5/2008 Jason Peters, T (Buf) The Bills said Peters will end his holdout and report to the team Saturday morning.

Analysis: Bills chief operating officer Russ Brandon said in a statement Friday that Peters has filed a reinstatement letter with the NFL. But he's not expected to play in the regular-season opener against Seattle on Sunday. Peters, a Pro Bowler, emerged as one of the top offensive linemen in the league last season, his first at left tackle.
9/5/2008 Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila, DE (GB) Gbaja-Biamila missed practice Friday as a precaution heading into Monday night's opener against Minnesota.

Analysis: Gbaja-Biamila has been recovering from right knee surgery. He fully participated in practice on Thursday.
9/5/2008 Ryan Grant, RB (GB) Grant missed practice Friday as a precaution heading into Monday night's opener against Minnesota.

Analysis: Grant has been dealing with an ailing hamstring. He fully participated in practice on Thursday.
9/5/2008 Deion Branch, WR (Sea) The return of Branch is going to wait at least a week.

Analysis: Seattle coach Mike Holmgren says Branch will not play Sunday when the Seahawks open their season at Buffalo. Branch was trying to get back in time for the season opener just seven months after having major reconstructive surgery on his left knee. Branch was injured in January's NFC playoff loss to Green Bay. He returned to doing some drills with the team this week after doing mostly individual work during training camp.
9/5/2008 Reggie Brown, WR (Phi) The Eagles could play the season opener without Brown after he missed his second straight practice Friday.

Analysis: Brown has been sidelined since straining his left hamstring in the second preseason game against Carolina. He took part in individual drills on Wednesday, but sat out the next two practices and is doubtful for Sunday's game against the St. Louis Rams. "He went out and practiced and it didn't feel right," coach Andy Reid said. "He stretched for a ball and it felt tight on him, so we backed him off."
9/5/2008 Clinton Portis, RB (Was) Portis rushed for 84 yards on 23 carries in the Redskins' loss to the Giants in Thursday's season opener.

Analysis: Portis, who rushed for 1,262 yards and 11 touchdowns last season, had a difficult time against a tough New York defense. His longest run was 23 yards, but he averaged just 2.8 yards on his other 22 rushing attempts.
9/5/2008 Justin Tuck, DE (NYG) Tuck, who replaced Michael Strahan at left end, started Washington's first series on offense with a sack in New York's 16-7 win Thursday.

Analysis: The Giants' defense, which led the league with 53 sacks last season, held the Redskins to 11 first downs and 209 total yards. They also forced four three-and-outs.
9/5/2008 Plaxico Burress, WR (NYG) Burress caught 10 passes for 133 yards in New York's 16-7 win over Washington in Thursday's season opener.

Analysis: Burress, who signed a two-year contract extension just hours before the game that will pay him an average of $7 million annually for the next five years, did not show any signs of being slowed by an ankle that had hampered him during the preseason.
9/5/2008 Brandon Jacobs, RB (NYG) Jacobs rushed for 116 yards on 21 carries in New York's 16-7 win over Washington in Thursday's season opener.

Analysis: Jacobs ran for 1,009 yards last season, but scored only six touchdowns (four rushing, two receiving).
9/5/2008 Eli Manning, QB (NYG) Manning completed 19 of 35 passes for 216 yards, was intercepted once and scored on a 1-yard touchdown run in the Giants' win over the Redskins on Thursday.

Analysis: Manning led the Giants on a game-opening 84-yard touchdown drive, but never got them in the end zone again. He did lead three drives resulting in field goals and helped New York control the clock.
9/5/2008 Angelo Crowell, LB (Buf) Crowell was placed on season-ending injured reserve Thursday in a surprise move that came after the player elected to have surgery on his left knee.

Analysis: The Bills issued a one-sentence release announcing the move hours after coach Dick Jauron said Crowell missed practice because he had elected to have arthroscopic surgery. It's not clear whether Crowell had surgery before the Bills placed him on IR, and the team did not disclose the nature of the injury, which comes as Buffalo prepares for its regular-season opener against Seattle on Sunday.
9/4/2008 Jason Jones, DE (Ten) Jones did not practice Thursday, a day after injuring his left elbow in practice.

Analysis: The second-round pick from Eastern Michigan, was wearing a brace on Thursday, but Titans coach Jeff Fisher said he hopes Jones will be able to practice Friday in preparation for Sunday's season opener against Jacksonville.
9/4/2008 Chad Ocho Cinco, WR (Cin) The Cincinnati Bengals said Thursday that they will refer to the receiver formerly known as Chad Johnson by his new legal name, Chad Ocho Cinco, in all club business. That includes the back of his jersey for Sunday's season opener at Baltimore.

Analysis: Johnson told The Associated Press on Wednesday that he wants to be called by his new name, but declined to talk about it any further.
9/4/2008 Daunte Culpepper, QB (Oak) Culpepper, who starred for the Minnesota Vikings before suffering a major knee injury in 2005, never returning to his past Pro Bowl form, retired from the NFL on Thursday.

Analysis: Culpepper completed 64 percent of his passes in a nine-year career, with 142 touchdowns. He tried to resuscitate his career with the Miami Dolphins in 2006 and the Oakland Raiders last season, struggling in both of those stops, and wasn't in training camp with any teams this year.
9/4/2008 Antwan Peek, LB (Cle) Peek has suffered a season-ending knee injury. Browns coach Romeo Crennel said Thursday that Peek ruptured his right patellar tendon while running during Wednesday's workout.

Analysis: It's a big setback for a Cleveland defense which ranked 30th overall last year and must face the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. Peek was signed as an unrestricted free agent in 2007 after spending four seasons with Houston.
9/4/2008 Tom Brady, QB (NE) New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick expects Brady to be ready Sunday for the season opener against Kansas City after the NFL's reigning MVP missed all four exhibition games.

Analysis: Brady, who participated fully in practice Wednesday, said Monday the condition of his foot has improved and he could have played in all four exhibition games. Wednesday's practice report listed the quarterback with right shoulder and foot injuries. But last year's practice reports listed him with the shoulder injury in every game and he started all of them. Brady has started 127 straight games, the third-longest streak by a quarterback in NFL history.
9/4/2008 Joey Galloway, WR (TB) Galloway said Wednesday he's ready to play Sunday in the season opener at New Orleans.

Analysis: Nevertheless, he stressed the call will be made by coach Jon Gruden, who held the 14th-year pro out of training camp, as well as all four preseason games, because of a groin injury. Gruden was noncommital after practice, but it sounded like there's a good chance Galloway will play.
