9/4/2008 Mats Sundin, C, Tor Though NHL camps open in two weeks, Sundin still hasn't decided if he'll return for another season. Still, the center has been working out on ice and said he's in good shape.

Analysis: Sundin said Wednesday he's unsure if his 37-year-old body can handle another grueling year in the NHL. He's received contract offers from numerous teams, including the Maple Leafs, the team he's led for 13 seasons. "I will not make up my mind before the season starts," Sundin said at a news conference. "That's how I feel right now. Others have started playing in the middle of the season. If I would feel like retiring, I would say it."
9/4/2008 Zach Bogosian, D, Atl The Atlanta Thrashers signed Bogosian, their first-round pick, to an entry-level contract Thursday.

Analysis: The 18-year-old defenseman was selected third overall after scoring 11 goals and 61 points with Peterborough of the Ontario Hockey League. Bogosian will take part in a prospect evaluation camp in Traverse City, Mich., before reporting for Atlanta's training camp on Sept. 20.
9/4/2008 Alex Pietrangelo, D, StL The St. Louis Blues signed Pietrangelo, the fourth overall pick in the June draft, on Thursday. The 18-year-old Pietrangelo will get a chance to make the team when training camp begins Sept. 19.

Analysis: Pietrangelo, from King City, Ontario, ranked seventh among Ontario Hockey League defensemen with 53 points last season for the Niagara Ice Dogs. He participated in the 2008 OHL All-Star Classic and the 2008 CHL Top Prospects game. "We are excited to have Alex signed as he will be a key component to our youth movement for years to come," team president John Davidson said.
9/3/2008 Stephane Yelle, C, Bos The Boston Bruins signed Yelle on Wednesday.

Analysis: Yelle, who spent the last five seasons with Calgary after seven seasons with Colorado, has 85 goals and 239 points in 844 career games. Last season, the 34-year-old Yelle had three goals and nine assists in 74 games. He added two goals in seven playoff games.
9/3/2008 Mike Van Ryn, D, Tor The Panthers traded Van Ryn to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday in exchange for veteran defenseman Bryan McCabe and a fourth-round draft pick.

Analysis: Van Ryn has two years remaining on his contract and will earn $3.35 million each season. His cap hit is only $2.9 million, allowing the Leafs to free up $11.45 million over the next three years. He spent the past four seasons with Florida, where he twice reached a career-high 37 points. The 29-year-old defenseman played just 20 games last season because of a wrist injury.
9/3/2008 Bryan McCabe, D, Fla The Maple Leafs traded McCabe and a fourth-round draft pick to the Florida Panthers on Tuesday for defenseman Mike Van Ryn, ridding Toronto of its biggest contractual obligation and finally giving the veteran defenseman closure in the sense that he now knows where he'll be when camp opens later this month.

Analysis: McCabe waived his no-trade clause to allow the deal to go through, but his willingness to be traded was a change in philosophy as it was earlier stated that Toronto would have to buy out his contract to get rid of him. McCabe had been one of the longest-serving Maple Leafs after being acquired from Chicago on Oct. 2, 2000. In 2007-08, he totaled 21 points in 41 games as he missed time with a broken hand.
9/2/2008 Lawrence Nycholat, D, Van The Senators traded Nycholat to the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday for forward Ryan Shannon.

Analysis: The 29-year-old Nycholat spent most of last season in the AHL. He had 12 goals and 49 points in 77 games for the Binghamton Senators and has played in 31 career NHL games with Ottawa, the Washington Capitals and New York Rangers over eight seasons, recording eight points.
9/2/2008 Ryan Shannon, RW, Ott The Canucks traded Shannon to the Ottawa Senators for defenseman Lawrence Nycholat on Tuesday.

Analysis: Shannon, a member of the Stanley Cup champion Anaheim Ducks in 2007, was traded to Vancouver later that summer and spent most of last season dealing with knee injuries. The speedy 5-foot-9 forward finished with five goals and 13 points in 27 games for the Canucks and has 24 points in 80 career NHL games.
9/2/2008 Alexander Radulov, RW, Nsh The Nashville Predators suspended Radulov indefinitely without pay for deciding to stick with his Russian KHL team rather than return to the NHL club.

Analysis: The 22-year-old Radulov had a season left on his entry level contract with the Predators, but signed a contract with a Russian KHL team. The Predators had given Radulov, their third-leading scorer last season with 58 points, until Monday to let them know if he decided to rejoin the team in time for the upcoming season.
8/29/2008 Andrej Meszaros, D, TB The Senators traded Meszaros to Tampa Bay on Friday for defensemen Filip Kuba and Alexandre Picard and a first-round pick in 2009.

Analysis: Meszaros had nine goals, 27 assists and 50 penalty minutes in 82 regular-season games for the Senators last season, his third in the NHL. The 22-year-old Slovak was a first-round pick in 2004.
8/28/2008 Colten Teubert, D, LA Teubert, the 13th pick in this year's draft, agreed to a three-year, entry-level contract with the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday. Terms were not disclosed.

Analysis: The 18-year-old defenseman had seven goals and 16 assists in 66 regular-season games for Regina of the Western Hockey League last season and one goal and four assists in six playoff games.
8/28/2008 Stu Barnes, C, Dal Barnes is retiring after 16 years in the NHL. The Stars said Thursday that the 37-year-old Barnes has agreed to a two-year contract to join Dave Tippett's coaching staff as an assistant.

Analysis: Barnes had 261 goals and 336 assists for 597 points in his 1,136-game NHL career. He played 329 of those games with the Stars. He also played in 116 Stanley Cup playoff games in 12 postseasons.
8/27/2008 Marc-Edouard Vlasic, D, SJ Vlasic agreed to a four-year contract extension with the San Jose Sharks on Wednesday, keeping one of the club's best young players with the Sharks through the 2012-13 season.

Analysis: Vlasic had two goals and 12 assists while playing in all 82 regular-season games for the Sharks last season, just his second full NHL campaign. He was third on the Sharks with 85 blocked shots while playing more than 21 1/2 minutes per game. Vlasic, who made the NHL's all-rookie team after the 2006-07 season, will be a key part of the Sharks' revamped defense under new coach Todd McLellan.
8/27/2008 Joe Sakic, C, Col Sakic has decided to play in 2008-09, signing a one-year contract worth $6 million with the Avalanche after spending months pondering retirement.

Analysis: Sakic took longer than normal to decide whether to return for a 20th season with the only franchise he has played for. He came to the conclusion that "I still enjoy playing and competing,'' he said in a statement released by the team Wednesday. Because the Democratic National Convention is taking place this week at the Pepsi Center, the Avs' home, the team said it wouldn't hold a news conference until next week.
8/26/2008 Akim Aliu, RW, Chi The Blackhawks signed Aliu, the 56th overall pick in the 2007 draft, to a three-year contract on Monday. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Analysis: The 19-year-old native of Nigeria played for the Ontario Hockey League's London Knights last year, scoring 28 goals with 33 assists and 133 penalty minutes in 60 games. After being signed to an amateur tryout contract on April 4, Aliu made his professional debut with the AHL's Rockford IceHogs, posting two penalty minutes in two contests.
8/25/2008 Bryan Berard, D, Phi Berard will attempt to make an NHL club on a tryout contract, after being invited to training camp with the Philadelphia Flyers. The 31-year-old Berard was the No. 1 overall draft pick of the Ottawa Senators in 1995, but refused to sign and was traded to the New York Islanders.

Analysis: In 619 career games covering 12 years with the Islanders, Toronto, New York Rangers, Boston, Chicago and Columbus, Berard has 76 goals and 247 assists. Last season with the Islanders, he had five goals and 17 assists in 54 games.
